Jeff Lyon
   Wisconsin Farm Bureau lobbyist Jeff Lyon updated members of the Shawano Rotary Club and their farmer guests Monday on agriculture related issues during National FFA Week.
           Lyon, a 1979 graduate of Shawano High School, noted that 2007 and 2008 had seen production cost increases for farmer, but income had jumped from $1.1 billion to $2.6 billion in Wisconsin.   Much of that was due to higher dairy prices and a 20 year high in production.   Exports were also very high, Lyon noted, indicating a weak dollar helped those sales.
          This winter, prices paid to dairy farmers have declined, in part due to reduced sales related to restaurant business.
          Farming remains a cyclical business and 2009 appears to be less profitable for farmers, along with other businesses, Lyon indicated.
          Shawano County Farm Bureau President Darryl Olson attended the event, along with other organization officers.
         Rotarian Ken Natzke introduced Dennis and Donna Berksbaken, who have been recognized with the Young Farmer Award in Shawano County and the Wisconsin state wide award.

I hope all is well in your neck of the woods. I hear spring is showing its head a little bit more over there. I suppose winter is not done yet, but is the sun starting to feel warmer?

I attached a second update I have been busy here with thesis check-ins and deadlines to meet. But things are going well, the days are starting to get longer and we just got a little bit of snow, which may sound awful to you guys this time of year, but is a welcomed sight here :)

A man came home from work late, tired and irritated, to find his 5 year old son waiting for him at the door.

"Daddy, may I ask you a question?"

"Yeah, sure, what is it?" replied the man.

"Daddy, how much money do you make an hour?"

"That's none of your business! What makes you ask such a thing?" the man said angrily.

"I just want to know. Please tell me, how much do you make an hour?" pleaded the little boy.

"If you must know, I make $20.00 an hour."

"Oh, " the little boy replied, head bowed. Looking up, he said, "Daddy, may I borrow $10.00 please?"

The father was furious. "If the only reason you want to know how much money I make is just so you can borrow some to buy a silly toy or some other nonsense, then you march yourself straight to your room and go to bed. Think about why you're being so selfish. I work long, hard hours everyday and don't have time for such childish games."

The little boy quietly went to his room and shut the door. The man sat down and started to get even madder about the little boy's questioning. How dare he ask such questions only to get some money. After an hour or so , the man had calmed down, and started to think he may have been a little hard on his son. May be there was something he really needed to buy with that $10.00 and he really didn't ask for money very often. The man went to the door of the little boy's room and opened the door. "Are you asleep son?" he asked.

"No daddy, I'm awake," replied the boy.

"I've been thinking, maybe I was too hard on you earlier," said the man. "It's been a long day and I took my aggravation out on you. Here's that $10.00 you asked for."

The little boy sat straight up, beaming. "Oh, thank you daddy!" he yelled. Then, reaching under his pillow, he pulled out some more crumpled up bills. The man, seeing that the boy already had money, started to get angry again. The little boy slowly counted out his money, then looked up at the man.

"Why did you want more money if you already had some?" the father grumbled.

"Because I didn't have enough, but now I do," the little boy replied. "Daddy, I have $20.00 now... Can I buy an hour of your time?"

Comments by our President

On April 13th, at noon, we will have our meeting of Committee Meetings during our regularly scheduled weekly Rotary Meeting, and we are encouraging all members to fully participate. (Committee Chair persons - Please make sure you're available to be the liaison to your respective Committees)

On April 27th, we have a Directors Meeting at the Hilgenberg office at 5:15 p.m. All members are

welcome.

May 15 - 17 Rotary District 6220 Conference, an annual event including all Rotary Clubs in our District. See Judy Judd for more info. Joe Gellings is planning to go.

On May 19th, we will be having our annual Fireside evening meeting, with the site to be yet

determined by Judy Judd.

On June 2nd, we will be having our Budget Meeting, with a location yet

to be determined. This is an evening dinner meeting, and anyone that

has any items that they would like to have included in the Budget, in particular

any expenditures, we would greatly appreciate having that information by the middle of May.

On June 16th, we will be having our Passing of the Gavel evening event, with the location to be yet determined.

As was mentioned at the last two meetings, Matt Pleshek, our Chairman of the Popcorn Wagon, is circulating the Sign-up Schedule. We encourage

all members to sign up for at least one time slot, and are very appreciative of every member's willingness to participate.

John Kestly, upon his return from his Florida vacation, will be working toward having our Brat Stand at the Country Store, scheduled for May 21, 22, and 23, to be fully staffed by Shawano Rotarians and their spouse, and/or significant other, preferably not both at the same time. This is a new fund raiser for us, and is an exciting time for us to be able to raise dollars for the many programs that we sponsor

and support.

A Reminder: our 50/50 Raffle postings go toward our Polio Plus Program Pledge, for Rotary International, a very worthwhile project, and we encourage all members to participate.

Rotary International Bill Gates Grant to Rotary for Polio Project

The Shawano Rotary Club recently completed its $25,000 donation to the City of Shawano for

improvements to Kuckuk Park. The City has installed several fishing piers and constructed a walkway

along the Wolf River, near trees the club has planted. Shown, from left: Parks Director Judy Judd,

This is our final $5000 installment of our commitment to the City for Rotary Trail in Kuckuk Park.

Curt Knoke presented two books, a pictorial of Shawano County called

"Turn of the Century - Shawano County" and a promo of the Green Bay Packers Fans

to Filipe Freitas, our Exchange Student. Curt did so after saying he used his

50/50 winnings to finance the book. ... He then mentioned he hadn't won in 3 years.

That may mean he has given away his books for his future unrealized winnings through 2014.

News from President Terry: Recent Board Meeting

The following items were discussed and acted on at the Board of Directors Meeting of January 19, 2009.

A New Member Procedure has been approved, wherein we are hoping to get our new members immediately involved

in the Club, and will hope to improve our introduction process to the membership.

We also are enthusiastic about our new International Project, wherein the Club's 50/50 Raffle proceeds will be used to fund

our pledge of $1,000 per year, for the next 3 years, for the PolioPlus Program (International Project).

We hope that all members will happily participate in the 50/50 Raffle. Any members who are unable to attend meetings

and would like to make a contribution can certainly do so, and forward it to Rick Carl, with a note indicating

the purpose of the contribution.

We are happy to report that we've made our major Community Service International Project payments to the Stoughton Fund

in Zimbabwe, and the final installment of our commitment to the Rotary Trail at Kuckuk Park.

As the Social Committee will be holding our Valentine Party on Tuesday, February 17, 2009, there will be no regularly

scheduled meeting for Monday, February 16, 2009.

A reminder that the Summer Exchange Program is in full swing, and anyone that knows of any high

school student that may be interested, to please contact Rotarian Scott Nordin, Chair of

the Summer Youth Exchange Program.

We are pleased to announce our next major fund raising project will be the Brat Stand at the Country

Store for the Memorial Day weekend 2009. Past President John Kestly has agreed to Chair the Brat Stand Committee,

and the following members have volunteered to assist: Jim Meyer, Tim Barthel, Julie Montour-Bottois, and Rhonda

Strebel. We hope that all members sign up for this 3-day project.

We were very pleased that almost all Committees submitted their written report to the Directors, and remind everyone

that our next Committee Meeting will be held on April 13, 2009, during our regularly scheduled Monday meeting.

The Board approved a new Mentorship Program for our Youth Rotars, wherein members will be asked to volunteer

to mentor our students, with the idea of making them more comfortable and more familiar with Rotary. Anyone wanting

more specific information relative to that process, should give Chair Todd Carlson a call.

Wine and Cheese event to benefit Rural Health Initiative: Friday Feb 13 2009.

Cheese and wine are a natural pairing, appreciated by lovers of food and drink.
The Rural Health Initiative is hosting its 5th Annual Wine & Cheese Fundraiser. The highly anticipated event is scheduled for Friday, February 13th at the Gathering in Shawano from 7:00 to 10:00 pm. Bring your sweetheart out for a night of fun.
The event is sponsored by Shawano County Dairy Promotions, Mid-County Coop, AgVentures, and ThedaCare. All proceeds will benefit the Rural Health Initiative for Shawano County.
Participants can sample a variety of 55 different wines, and delicious cheeses from around the world.
Tickets are $25 per person and can be purchased prior to the event by calling Rhonda Strebel at 715-524-1488 or by ordering via e-mail at Rhonda.Strebel@thedacare.org

In addition to the event, we have a fantastic raffle! Strebel said an event like this promotes awareness about Rural Health and the money helps provide more services for preventive health and education to Shawano County farmers.

Bill Gates announces new US$255 million Grant for ending polio!!

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has awarded US$255 million to Rotary International in the global effort to eradicate polio, bringing the total committed by Rotary and the Gates Foundation to $555 million.

Shortly after meeting with incoming district governors from the four countries where the wild poliovirus is endemic -- Afghanistan, India, Nigeria, and Pakistan -- Bill Gates announced the new grant on Wednesday morning at the International Assembly in San Diego, California, USA.

“Rotarians, government leaders, and health professionals have made a phenomenal commitment to get us to a point at which polio afflicts only a small number of the world’s children,” Gates said. “However, complete elimination of the poliovirus is difficult and will continue to be difficult for a number of years. Rotary in particular has inspired my own personal commitment to get deeply involved in achieving eradication.”

"We are going to end polio now," affirmed Robert S. Scott, chair of RI's International PolioPlus Committee.

In response to the new $255 million Gates Foundation grant, Rotary will raise $100 million in matching funds. In November 2007, RI received a $100 million Gates Foundation grant, which Rotary committed to match by raising $100 million.

The two Gates Foundation challenge grants now total $355 million. Rotary International’s matching effort in response is called Rotary’s US$200 Million Challenge, which must be completed by 30 June 2012.

The $255 million grant is one of the largest challenge grants ever given by the Gates Foundation and the largest received by Rotary in its 104-year history. Rotary will spend the grant in direct support of immunization activities carried out by the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, which is spearheaded by RI and its partners , the World Health Organization, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and UNICEF. Rotary will distribute the funds through grants to WHO and UNICEF.

The participation of Rotary clubs and individual Rotarians in Rotary’s US$200 Million Challenge remains crucial to its success. Rotary has raised nearly $73 million toward this amount: $62 million in contributions and $11 million in commitments. Each club is being challenged to organize a public fundraiser annually for the next three years. In October, The Rotary Foundation Trustees approved special Paul Harris Fellow Recognition, which begins 1 July, featuring a certificate with the End Polio Now logo.

Polio eradication has been Rotary’s top priority since 1985, with more than $1.2 billion contributed to the effort. Gates praised Rotary for providing the volunteers, advocates, and donors who have helped bring about a 99 percent decline in the number of polio cases. “The world would not be where it is without Rotary, and it won’t get where it needs to go without Rotary,” he said.

The final hurdle still is ahead, said RI President-elect John Kenny. This grant shows that the Gates Foundation is just as committed as Rotary to ridding the world of this disease, he said.

Gates also shared with the incoming district governors and Rotary leaders a story from his trip to India in November, when he held a nine-month-old girl afflicted with polio in his arms in a slum in East Delhi.

“She obviously didn’t understand why people were poking her legs and looking so serious. But she’ll never be able to kick a ball around, never be able to play hide-and-seek with her friends, because she has polio,” Gates said. “As I held Hashmin, I thought, We can end this.”

“We don’t know exactly when the last child will be affected. But we do have the vaccines to wipe it out,” he said. “Countries do have the will to deploy all the tools at their disposal. If we all have the fortitude to see this effort through to the end, then we will eradicate polio.”

In addition, the governments of the United Kingdom and Germany announced they have respectively committed $150 million and $130 million to eradicate polio, which will not count toward Rotary’s challenge.  Government support is key to polio eradication efforts, said Scott.

He will present a power point presentation Agricultural and Oil industry in LA. He is a ardent Green Bay Packer Fan and is here to see the Packer/ Cowboy game!

Sept 23 Tuesday evening: the Reverse Raffle

The raffle is Tuesday nite, Sept 23 at 6 PM at the Woodland in Gresham. Tickets are STILL only $75.00 per ticket. I am still in need of donations for door prizes and auction items for this event. Keep me in mind. Also, please tell friends and neighbors about our great evening and invite them to participate. September 29 Monday noon - Shawano Rotary Member Julie Van Dyke and friends will present a program on the Shawano Area Youth Football League. This is a contact football league for grades 4^th, 5^th, 6^th. August is the beginning of their 2^nd season of contact football for these ages. The season lasts until the first week in October.

People in the news: Amber Swenor and Samantha Huss

Amber Swenor and her niece Samantha Huss were both featured in the Fair Edition of the Shawano Leader.

Amber won the Emereth Brunner scholarship in 2006, then spent a semester abroad in Africa and spoke to Rotary about her experience. She previously served as Fairest of the Fair for Shawano County and the State of Wisconsin. She volunteered again at the 2008 fair.

Samantha was our Club’s outbound student and reported to us on her year abroad.

This year she was named Fairest of the Fair for Shawano County and had many appearances at the local fair. James Habeck.

New Member !! Rhonda Strebel.
Most Shawano County farmers may not look like the Beach Boys, but both have been known to ask for help from Rhonda.

Our Rhonda has been helping area farmers with health care tests and information the last five years, after getting degrees in sports medicine at Concordia and hotel management at Fox Valley Tech.

Rhonda grew up on a farm near Cecil and still enjoys gardening at her Shawano home with her husband Eugene “Hugs” Strebel. She also enjoys snowmobiling, traveling and entertaining at home.

How much time Rhonda has at home is debatable, since she spends volunteer time with Healthy Shawano County Initiative, Leadership Shawano County, a Dairy Promotions group and the Shawano Country Chamber Foundation.

Rhonda first attended a Rotary meeting as a guest speaker and shows promise for fine tuning our gourmet popcorn service at the flea market.

Rotary Noon meeting Programs and special events

Aug 4 - Ann Radtke will talk and give a slide show about her experiences in Zimbabwe during her visit with Dr StoughtonWe have had a strong interest in Dr Stoughtons work in Zimbabwe, so this should be an interesting program.

Aug 11 - Scott Heffernon will talk about his experiences at the "Badger Boys State", a government "camp" held in Madison. Shawano Rotary Club provided some funding for this trip.

Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar Nick Bisley will give us an update on his plans. He leaves for Sweden to study in a few weeks.

Aug 18 - The committee for the new school referendum will provide some background on the upcoming school referendum in September

Joint Meeting of Local Rotary Clubs

I received a voice mail from Joe Jones, our assistant governor for Rotary, requesting a head count for any Shawano Rotarians who would like to attend the joint Rotary meeting of the Clintonville, Waupaca, Marion and New London clubs. District Gov. Tom Friese will be the speaker. We have participated at this event the last several years. The meeting is scheduled for Sept. 10 for Dinner at the Clintonville Golf Course. The only difference this year is that because of our Club size and attendence record, President Tom will be visiting our Club in September independent of the joint meeting ----- way to go Shawano Rotary. !! I am requesting Shawano Rotarians to either email or call me (526-6143 ext. 111) by August 21 if they plan on attending. Cost will be approximately $10. Thanks, Terry

Report on the Passing of the Gavel Celebration
Remarks from the Outgoing President, Larry Romuald.

We as Rotarians know the needs in our communities and the world. We as Rotarians provide unselfish service above self.
This was exemplified with Cap Wallrich being designated at the District Conference as a recipient of Rotary Shares Award from District Governor Maynard Bowers.
This past year saw many accomplishments of the Shawano Rotary Club and it was my pleasure to be a small part of them.
Our membership continued to grow. We ended the year with a positive membership growth. The is no small achievement when viewed at the declining membership in other District 6220 Rotary Clubs. Our membership has taken on a new look. We have more gender diversity and the average member age is getting younger. This bodes well for the future as we take on more community projects that require a higher energy level and commitment.
Financially we ended the year with a surplus. This gives Terry additional money to fund special community projects. Our Reverse Raffle again was a success. Special thanks go out to Rob Michelson. Adeline Brath should be commended for obtaining Wal-Mart's $1,000 donation in conjunction with the Raffle. As a result, we were able to honor our fourth payment to the City for the Trail at Kuckuk Park. One payment remains. I encourage you to go down there and see the beautiful granite signs that have been placed at both ends of the Trail. We continued our support of the Stoughton Mission in Zimbabwe. We pray that troubled country will find a way to end its conflicts and permit the Stoughton's to return.
Our Youth Exchange Program continues to be strong. Cap Wallrich has to be commended for a job well done. We have an outbound student in Bailey Schreiber going to Finland. We have an inbound student from Brazil arriving in August and my thanks to those that have stepped up to be host families.
From my exposure at District 6220 Conferences, I have become keenly aware of the impact The Rotary Foundation is having. From the eradication of Polio to the miracle of Power Flour, Rotary is making a difference in undeveloped countries. The international focus remains to alleviate Health and Hunger, increase Children Literacy and secure Safe Drinking Water. One of my goals for the past year was to increase our membership monetary contributions. This was accomplished and now we have 17 sustaining members making contributions to the Foundation. Let us expand upon this commitment in the future.
I would like to close my remarks with a special thank you to Sherry Strahl from our CRI Staff. She has been very helpful in helping me with my Rotary duties over the past 6 years. This past year was a success. I thank you for your support and look forward to the coming Rotary Year.

Paul Harris Fellow Awards
Shawano Rotarians of the Year

Bill Ross and Joe Gellings received Paul Harris Fellow awards, while J.R. Habeck was named Shawano Rotarian of the year recently at The Gathering.
Ross noted that Rotary had done much to eradicate polio from the planet, which had a personal impact on him. Polio caused the death of his childhood cousin, which affected that boy's parents for years. Polio commonly causes crippling effects but is a threat now is less than 5% of the world thanks largely to a partnership between Rotary International and the Bill Gates Foundation. When he was growing up, Ross remembered polio outbreaks that caused closing of parks, swimming pools and water fountains.

Gellings was recognized for his years of service which have included time working on the foreign student exchange program. He also edits and creates the monthly club newsletter.
Habeck was given endowment recognition for a Paul Harris fellowship after contributing to the endowment fund, where the principal remains invested, with earnings distributed to causes such as power flour, quality drinking water and emergency shelter around the world.
Habeck had previously served as a club officer, has driven the club float in parades, contributes articles to the newsletter and media, helped with Mountain Bay trail cleanup and planting of trees at Kuckuk Park. He has emceed each Reverse Raffle held by the club, where participants win prizes, eat, drink and laugh.
Rotary was founded in 1905 by Attorney Paul Harris, who practiced in Chicago but grew up in Racine. Currently, there are Rotary clubs in about 166 countries and in each continent except Antarctica.

Scholarships !!

At a recent meeting held at The Gathering, college scholarships of $750 per student were awarded by the Shawano Rotary Club to Chris Culhane, Lacey Carlstrom and Courtney Machmueller.

Dr. Paul DIbley presented Machmueller the Emmereth Brunner Award, noting that she earned recognition by writing an essay detailing her academic and public service activities.

Brunner was a Green Valley farmer that personally helped advance agriculture in eastern Europe countries, coordinating Rotary club efforts.

Machmueller has been active in helping nursing home residents in this area. A Clintonville High School graduate, Courtney also has been active in her church, 4 H group and Salvation Army. The daughter of Jeff and Kim Machmueller, she will attend UW Whitewater and study early education.

Rotarian Steve Miller introduced scholarship recipients Carlstrom and Culhane. They were co-valedictorians at Shawano Community High School and selected from the top 10 boys and girls in their class.

Culhane excelled in academics and athletics, participating in 13 sport programs while in high school, earning awards as captain, all conference and MVP in various sports. He intends to run cross country and study at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska. Chris is the second in his family to win a Shawano Rotary scholarship, following his brother Dan, a student at Northwestern. Dr. Kevin and Muffy Culhane attended the ceremony with their son.

Carlstrom excelled academically, musically, on the stage and was noted to have been a powder puff quarterback. The daughter of Jim and Kelly Carlstrom, she plans to attend UW Madison to study business.

Kathy Bruhn joined Shawano Rotary on a good note.
Kathy studied music notes at UW Madison (bachelors) and UW Milwaukee (masters) before teaching it at New London and Racine. Kathy also served as a school adminstrator for 15 years and currently volunteers for the music programs at Zion Lutheran church. She also has volunteered at Olga Brener Elementary School.
Kathy and her husband Chuck have two daughters and three grandchildren.
Having been named a Paul Harris fellow while at the Racine club, Kathy expects to contribute to our Shawano projects.
In her spare time, Kathy follows the Badgers and Packers and in season, she enjoys cross country skiing.

We find ourselves at a time when we must say farewell to Alessandra Brignola. For the past two years "Ale" has been our Inbound Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar from Genoa, Italy studying at Michigan Technological University in Houghton Michigan. In May she earned her Masters degree in Industrial Archeology and was also named as the "2008 Woman of Promise by the Department of Social Sciences". For those of you who got to know Ale, know that we are saying farewell to a wonderful individual and an excellent Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar, she has excelled not only as a scholar but also as an ambassador. We can all be very proud of her. Ale, we wish you the very best of luck in the future and please stay in touch with us!
Our 2008-09 Rotary Ambassadorial Scholars, Kim Martino and Nick Beasley. Nick is from Gresham, WI and is sponsored by the Rotary Club of Shawano. He will soon be headed off to Sweden to study sustainable development in the Masters program in Strategic Leadership at Blekinge Institute of Technology in Karlskrona, Sweden. In May, Nick graduated from UW River Falls, congratulations Nick!
Kim is from Lisle, IL and is sponsored by the Rotary Club of Marquette Breakfast. She will soon be headed to Delhi University in Delhi, India where she will be studying Biology. Kim is presently a student at Northern Michigan University in Marquette, MI.
We wish both of them the very best of luck in their Rotary Ambassadorial year and I am confident that they both will be excellent Rotary Ambassadorial Scholars. We will update you throughout the coming year on their experiences.
Juliana Hagembe, our 2007-08 scholar is completing her year at the University of Hong Kong where she has been studying Public Health. Juliana is a citizen of Nairobi, Kenya and was studying at Northern Michigan University in Marquette, MI where she earned a Bachelors degree and has nearly completed her Masters Degree in Biology. She is planning to return to NMU for a semester to complete her research, thesis and Masters degree. Once Juliana has returned and is available to present programs on her Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship year we will let you know how to contact her to schedule a program.
We wish all of our scholars the best of luck in the future and the scholars join me in thanking all who have supported The Rotary Foundation. Your contributions have made this amazing opportunity available to them and are helping to make the world a better place one person at a time!
On April 19, a committee composed of DG Maynard Bowers, DGN Mary Schwaiger, Kim Martino, Nick Beasley and I interviewed six amazing applicants for the 2009-10 Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship. After lengthy and thoughtful consideration, we selected Nicole Weber from Tomah, WI as the District 6220 2009-10 Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar. Nicole plans to study for a Masters of Public Health at the University of Geneva in Geneva, Switzerland. She is currently studying at Northern Michigan University and will be receiving her Bachelors degree in May 2009. The Rotary Club of Marquette is sponsoring Nicole. Congratulations Nicole!

Good for your grand daughter Maris, she seemed like a smart girl from very early on, she will have a bright future if she's going to work hard, and go to College. There she can also apply abroad, which will improve her chances of becoming what I call a "world citizen" in this globalized world.

So very nice of you to write such a long letter, and as always, it's a pleasure to read them. I can't believe that you are taking in another exchange student, but I must admire your bravery. I hope you the best of luck with this new Brazilian boy, and I am sure that he will come to adore you as I did. I bet he'll enjoy entering the Braun's home also. At least he'll have the gang (the girls and Nutmeg) welcoming him with open arms.

I am always happy to hear that your piano students are doing fine. Only a good teacher can bring out the best!

I for one, am doing pretty good. Planning to graduate with a Bachelors degree from my university this coming December, and I am currently carrying out my internship in a global company called Metso Minerals. They specialize in crushing and screening of rocks for mining, civil, and construction projects worldwide. I have been mapping out processes of a distribution center that supplies with spare and wear parts for the machinery. It's been interesting, and I have acquired great business process related skills with the process work I have conducted.

In my free time, I have fallen in love with dancing as a serious hobby. I dance almost ten hours a week different styles of SALSA dancing. It's a couple dance originating from Caribbean countries like Cuba, and Puerto Rico. It's been developed further in the US, and I am dancing more or less the styles that come from the US. The dance itself is vibrant, usually fast, with a world of different turns and moves. I fell in love with the music of Eddie Palmieri (Jazz salsa) prior to dancing, but now dancing combined with great rhythmic music, I am have been born again! I also play Golf, but I would have to say I am a better dancer than a golfer. A lot better!

I still play piano and the guitar, and have been finalizing many of the pieces I have been composing during these couple of years. I am going to give you Lynne a two hour concert, watch out!

I never made it South Carolina; my new boss buried that idea, which was a shame, because I really looked forward to working in the US for the spring. I will have to look again next year, spring 2009. I may also get shipped to the Asian counties, where at least you get paid really well. Let's see what happens, I'll keep you posted.

--Game Fest. Contact Joe Jones, Waupaca rotary club. this is a big money raiser for their club.

--Hold an international dinner. This is done by Waupaca Rotary club. It has developed over a 3 year run, to be a fund raiser for the Youth Exchange Program. JG can get advice from Sandy Testin and Joe Jones of that club. They bring in inbounds from nearby rotary clubs to be speakers and to be a panel and answer questions. This event helps recruit host families. they get sponsorship from local businesses to cover the cost of the meal, then charge $75 per couple.

--Clintonville club did a big fund raiser jointly with another service club in town. – Comedian from Green Bay with show in auditorium.

-- fund raiser concert. Curt Knoke may be able to get pianist Michael Kim from Lawrence Univ. to perform. maybe add in High School music and choral groups. sell tickets.

--Work at the Fair. get a stand. Scott Nordin recommended.

--Raffle big prize, sell at popcorn stand. sell around town.

--Special event - one time deal. see concert above or something else. e. g. U W Band concert.

We are looking for volunteers for scooping ice cream.

Rotary’s four key strategies for stopping poliovirus transmission:

Routine immunization
High infant-immunization coverage with four doses of oral polio vaccine (OPV) in the first year of life is critical. Routine immunization is essential because it’s the primary way that polio-free countries protect their children from the threat of imported polio.
National Immunization Days
For decades, Rotary’s PolioPlus program has been one of the driving forces during National Immunization Days, or NIDs. Rotarians are involved in myriad ways before, during, and after an NID, by providing funds for millions of drops of vaccine, promoting upcoming campaigns in the community, distributing vaccine to local health centers, serving as monitors, working with local officials to reach every child, and participating in surveillance efforts.
Surveillance
Rotarians play an important role in working with health workers, pediatricians, and others to find, report, and investigate cases of acute flaccid paralysis in timely manner (ideally within 48 hours of onset). PolioPlus Partners sometimes helps fund containers that preserve the integrity of stool samples during transport to laboratories. The program has also played a leading role in providing equipment for the global poliovirus laboratory.
Targeted mop-up campaigns
Rotary’s support of mop-up campaigns is similar to NID volunteering, but on a smaller, often “house-to-house,” scale.

Help plan the next Shawano Rotary year

the "Fireside Meeting" is scheduled for Tuesday, May 13, 2008 at Luiigi's: social hour at 6 PM and Dinner/Meeting at 6:45PM. Menu tentatively includes roast chicken and pasta dishes. Please sign up at the meeting on May 5 or a call Terry Hilgenberg at 526-6143 ext. 111 with your reservation.

Board Meeting Notes

A board meeting was held on April 23, 2008. The board discussed the Treasurers report and found everything to be on target.

We discussed the membership report. Currently, we have 75 members. The board voted to remove one member for non payment of dues.

The Fireside Meeting will be held at Luigi's on May 13th with incoming President Terry Hilgenberg presiding.

The Passing of the Gavel will be held on July 7th.

The Rotary Scholarship Awards, Paul Harris Fellowship Foundation Award and the Rotarian of the Year Award were all discussed.

The Board voted not to take individual requests for funding.

The City of Shawano Tree Advisory request for volunteers will be sent to the Community Service Committee for their future consideration.

The District 6220 Conference will be held May 16-18 in Marquette, Michigan. Terry Hilgenberg and Larry Romuald will attend.

The budget meeting will be held at 5 p.m. on June 3rd at The Romuald residence.

I am looking for a few Rotary volunteers to work with me in assisting the City in maintaining the greenspaces or flowerbeds around the city this summer. If we have 3 or 4 volunteers we could manage the area by the Business Park Sign. Or, we can take on some smaller green spaces or, flower pots.

NID PROCEDURE for 2008 / 2009:-
1. Road Show :-
Their will be a road show (Rally) one day prior to POLIO SURVELLIENCE ROUNDS to create the awareness in Parents / Guardian / Public.
2. Polio Immunization Surveillance Round / NID :-
Agra- Firozabad full day Activity Polio Immunization Day (Surveillance Round) in Polio Effected Area supported by Local Rotary Clubs + District 3110 along with Local Chief Medical Officer (CMO) & other Senior Health Officers with Commissioner & District Magistrate of that area. Morning at 8.30Am attend the Inaugural function at District / Hospital compound. You can enjoy the below mentioned festivals in the bracket around the Polio NID date.

3.The Mop-Up-Round-
This round start after Polio NID for the next3days in which volunteer go door to door, house to house and provide the Polio vaccine to the children's who could not come to have the Polio vaccine on Polio NID. You can bring pen, pencil, eraser, balloon, whistles, sticker and small toys to distribute among the children's. Following are dates for POLIO SURVELLIENCE ROUNDS for year 2008-09 assigned by local Chief Medical Officer.

Rotary Youth Exchange News:

Our new Youth Exchange student starting August 08 will be a boy from Brazil. We hope he is a strong presence in our club like Fernanda. . . . That brings up our annual appeal for Host parents for next school year - Aug 08 to July 09. we need 3 families to step up and say yes. If you know of someone we should contact, notify Cap Wallrich or Joe Gellings. Cap has his committee going, contacting a list of about 20 people, but we get 5 no's for every maybe. Who can you add to our list to call.

A Community Service Project:

OUR FOUNDATION:

The Inner Wheel U.S.A. Foundation, Inc., provides myoelectric prosthesis to children born without or lost an arm or hand through disease or accident. The clinics work with the Foundation to also provide for recycling and distribution of myoelectric limbs.

The children's Myoelectric Limb Project provides an avenue for children whose insurance or family circumstances do not allow them to benefit from the latest updated technology. Turning "disabilities into possibilities" is not a dream but a reality of the Inner Wheel U.S.A. Foundation.

Hanger Prosthetics and Orthotics, Inc. with over 600 clinics nationwide and the Children's Healthcare of Atlanta (CHOA) work with the Inner Wheel U.S.A. Foundation, Inc. by bringing new technology to those in need.

The Inner Wheel Club of Shawano has participated in this project.

New Member Profile - Jay Moynihan

Studying animal behavior to see what develops is a hobby of Rotarian Jay Moynihan.

At work, UW Extension Resource Agent Jay works with humans on planning and other projects.
Training for such work started at UW Milwaukee, where Jay studied mass communications and international studies. That led to a doctorate degree from the Creighton University Law School.

Jay practiced law and also taught in college before his current post.

Locally, Jay enjoys being a member of the Navarino Nature Center.

New Member profile - DR. KATHRYN MEAD

Back to the future!

After graduating from Shawano High School, Katie’s future took her to studies at UW Green Bay for a bachelor’s degree. Katie then studied backs at Northwestern Health Sciences University and eventually ended up working at the local Countryside Chiropractic Clinic.

By joining Rotary, Dr. Katie hopes to form new friendships and expand community activities. She has also expanded community involvement through the Optimist Club and musically with SAMBA.

Spare time activities for Dr. Katie include photography and camping, presumably with her husband Dan Mead, son of Rotary member Tim. Dan is a local teacher with the Shawano School District.

New member profile - Tim Barthels

Credit Tim Barthels with the good sense to join Rotary.
Tim works on extending credit as a Co-Vantage Credit Union manager. He began experiencing the credit union business in Idaho.
In the past, Tim accepted credit cards for customers renting cars from his employer Enterprise.
To qualify for his jobs, Tim earned credits at Fox Valley Lutheran High School and Concordia University at Mequon.
At home, Tim credits his wife Theresa and son Paul for occupying his time. However, Tim still finds time to fit in camping, running and reading.
The Leadership Shawano County class should help provide skills that Tim can use with Rotary. He has already hosted a Money Conference for area people and begun to participate at St. James Lutheran Church.

The Recent Board Meeting

A Rotary Board Meeting was held on January 16, 2008.

The board reviewed the membership roster and assisted in assigning new members to committees.

Steve Miller presented a new membership proposal form. It includes a list and description of the various committees and asks for the new members to indicate their areas of interest. The forms are available from Rick Carl and Judy Judd. Thanks Steve for a job well done!

The Board reaffirmed the policy on financial requests made by individuals. As per past practice, there will be no direct contributions made to individuals.

The next board meeting will be held on Wednesday, April 23, 2008 at 5 p.m. at C.R.I.

Board meeting minutes:
there was a Rotary Board meeting was Dec 10 at noon. The following is a list of the newest members: Tim Barthel, Todd Carlson, James Meyer, Katie Mead, Jay Moynihan, Carrie Verkuilen, Julie Montoure-Bottois, Jim Lotter, Lorna Marquardt and Paul Black. We also regretfully accepted the resignations of Allan "Pete" Peterson and Don Schoedel.

Discussion was held regarding the Rotary Trail signage at Kuckuk Park. (Rob Mickleson is in charge of the actual signage).

Discussion was also held regarding new membership applications, packets and asking new members if they have interest in particular committees.

There will be follow up for those members that are over 60 days delinquent in payment of dues.

We made the 4th payment to the City for the Trail at Kuckuk Park. The check was presented to the Mayor in December. On the same day, a check was received for $1,000 from Walmart.

The next board meeting will be held at CRI at 4:30 p.m. on January 17, 2008.

New Member Biographies.
Todd Carlson

If Todd Carlson doesn't do windows, it's the only thing he hasn't accomplished at a school.

Todd is currently superintendent of the Shawano School District, preparing for the role by teaching, serving as athletic director, principal and athletic director. While superintendent at Suring, Todd also coached the boys basketball team to the 2007 state tournament.

Todd's education degrees were awarded at UW Green Bay, Marian College and Winona State.

Todd and his wife Micki have adult daughterss Emily and Ashley and a son, Brock, still in high school.

Todd expects Rotary to involve him with new people and projects in the Shawano area.

In his spare time, Todd enjoys motorcycling, hobby farming and high school athletics.

Dear Fellow Rotarians,

I would like to encourage all of you to take the opportunity to spend time with Fernanda. Invite her over to your home for dinner, take her on a shopping trip to a larger city, or show her some local sites or give her a tour of your business.

I recently asked her what she'd like to see or do while she's here. She is pretty much up to any type of venture. Sue and I had her stay with us for a weekend and we visited Kohler and took her shopping for some winter boots, and she had a great time.

If anyone is planning a trip to Milwaukee, Chicago, or Minneapolis, she would love to visit a larger city. One of her favorite hobbies is down hill skiing, so if that's a winter sport of yours, please consider bringing her along.

These students are great company, good conversationalists, and are very eager to try something different…something American Style.

Please contact me prior to making any overnight plans or travel beyond 150 miles.

Greg Parker.

Not many Terrors in school end up with a doctorate degree.

That's what happened to Appleton West (Terrors) graduate Greg Parker, eventually.

Practicing law was only the most recent career for Greg, whose first degree was in Police Science at Fox Valley Technical College. That degree was used, as Greg served as an Outagamie County Sheriff's Deputy and a military MP before an injury sidelined him.

Following the injury, Greg received a bachelors degree in business administration, then a law degree from Thomas Cooley Law School in Michigan.

Atty. Parker practiced in a law office for years in the Fox Cities before winning the District Attorney's race here in 2006.

Greg and wife Kari has a seven year old son, Chris and a five year old daughter, Courtney.

Greg enjoys fishing, hiking and reading. He frequently speaks to school classes and is also a member of the Gresham Lions Club.... ... ... prepared by James Habeck.

Thanksgiving Food Collection for Humanitarian assistance: For The next three Mondays, November 5, 12 and 19th - we will be accepting donated food items for our Thanksgiving Food Collection. Examples of excellent items would be canned goods, packaged dinner, cake mixes, spaghetti, spaghetti sauce, etc. After our November 19th meeting, I will be delivering the items to the Shawano Area Food Pantry and Resource Center, (SAFEPARC) Ginny Jesse, Community Service Chairperson.

Reverse Raffle Rundown / Postmortem

Wayne Habeck and Greg Parker each won $500 in the Shawano Rotary Club's Reverse Raffle recently held at The Woodland in Gresham. Funds raised by the club go to a variety of uses, but most funding goes toward improving Shawano's Kuckuk Park along the Wolf River and for Dr. Richard Stoughton's medical services in Zimbabwe, Africa. While the big money was given to the people whose ticket was drawn last, others won their ticket price back or won prizes such as grocery items and baskets made in Africa. Dan Zierden won tickets to a Bill Cosby concert. Since football was the event theme, related prizes were given there. Jim and Carol Foreman won a sausage football for their anniversary. Larry Romuald had the winning bid for a 10 year championship anniversary signed football from the Green Bay Packers Emcee J.R. Habeck ensured the club raffle offered unique prizes as well. Included among the fantasy football draft winners were Ila Moede, who drafted a Right Guard (deodorant) and Tom Aumann, who drafted the ultimate safety – Depends underwear.

Rob Michelson organized the event, with help from others including Curt Knoke and Steve Miller.

Third group graduates from Rotary peace program

The Rotary Foundation's third group of students studying peace and conflict resolution at a university in Bangkok, Thailand, graduated from their intensive, three-month program on 14 September.

The 20 students, who hail from 13 countries and received financial aid from the Foundation, earned certificates in peace and conflict studies from Chulalongkorn University for completing the Rotary Peace and Conflict Studies program.

The program is aimed at professionals working for governmental and nongovernmental organizations. Graduates are expected to return to their jobs and apply the skills they've learned. The first class of students graduated in September 2006. The next group will begin studying in January.

The graduates include a staff correspondent for a newspaper in India, a deputy police superintendent from Nigeria, a teacher from the United States, and a program coordinator for a nongovernmental organization in Tajikistan

Peace Community Program

Executive Summary

The Rotary Peace Community Program is truly a worthy exercise to breathe new life into Community Service. It is an opportunity for local Clubs to form an alliance with local town or city councils, the police service and other community agencies in making a declaration of Community Peace.

As Rotarians and community leaders, we can foster the promotion of world peace and understanding by rewarding communities, citizens, government representatives, organizations and students for their participation in voluntary service. They deserve recognition and can provide great examples for others to follow.

This project is based on the philosophy that peace begins in the Family, in the Home and in the Community. In Rotary, we believe that peace belongs in the hearts and minds of each individual. Through awareness, goodwill and rejection of discord, we can stimulate a shift in attitudes within both our local and global communities.

Rotary Community Peace Credo:

Respect for cultural diversity, and the life and dignity of

every person, without discrimination or prejudice

Rejection of violence towards all people in all its forms

Resolution of conflict within local and global communities

Reconciliation of differences in the pursuit of harmony

In proclaiming Peace Communities, cooperative partnerships are formed between Rotary and Local Government bodies. It is recommended that a “Community Peace Sub-Committee” of the local Rotary Club be formed to encourage and help support any existing Community Service organizations. There may already be other interested groups or peace initiatives in the community which should be researched and helped in a cooperative spirit.

Peace begins at home and in each community. It transcends the simplistic view of an absence of war and encompasses all those measures that improve human relations with positive and harmonious outcomes. The rejection of violence, the respect for life and human dignity, the resolution of personal and urban violence and the reconciliation of differences can realize those freedoms under which peace and harmony can flourish.

We hope that you will discuss this project with your District Governor and Club Members with the object of developing this great Peace Project in your local community and helping to spread Peace throughout our world. A planning kit is available for download at www.RotaryPeaceSummit.com.

RI President Wilf Wilkinson has announced a Rotary World Peace Summit
to be held next April 25th to 27th , 2008. It will take place in
Windsor, Ontario, Canada, an international border city with Detroit,
Michigan, USA located in District 6400.

This event will showcase all we do as Rotarians to foster world peace
through understanding. Highlights include participation of senior
Rotary and Global Peace leaders with several unique peace related
presentations and activities.

"Peace begins as home" in every family and community in which we
live. That is why we are promoting the declaration or re-affirmation
of current Peace Cities and Communities around the world. Our
objective is to have 5,000 self-declared Peace Communities within the
next year.

As part of this initiative, we encourage you to invite your clubs to
embrace this Peace Community Project in their area. To help you do
this we are attaching a draft message you can forward to each of your
club Presidents, place on your district website and include in your
Governor's newsletter. We are also attaching a summary of the
program and sample agreement to help explain the concept.

Of course, we hope you will promote this as a great 'Community
Service' project and would appreciate you asking your district
committee to work with clubs in this regard. Your attendance at this
event is welcomed, along with Rotarians and Mayors of all current or
future peace cities.

A 'Planning Kit' with suggestions and templates will soon be
available at http://www.rotarypeacesummit.org/ to show clubs how they can get
involved with their local community. A workshop is planned at the
summit event and a ceremony will recognize Mayors of the Peace
Communities in attendance.

President’s Message:

Hello Ladies,

Tom and I are looking forward to hosting the Chili Supper/Bonfire on Saturday, October 20, 2007 at our home. Let’s hope the rain is gone by then. Remember, it’s “Guest night”! If you know of anyone that might be interested in joining Inner Wheel, please bring them as a guest. They don’t have to be a Rotary spouse. They can be a female partner, mother, daughter, granddaughter, sister, widow, etc. of a Rotarian or former Rotarian. Honorary members are welcome with no affiliation to Rotary.

Thank you to those members and spouses that attended the Safe Haven 5^th Anniversary Celebration. It was a very informative and enjoyable evening. Congratulations go out to Donna Rae & Larry for their outstanding support of this well needed facility in Shawano County. Safe Haven is in need of diapers (size 3 and larger) and Lysol or Clorox disinfecting wipes. If you’d like to bring one or the other items to the chili supper or the meeting we will present it to Safe Haven from IWC of Shawano.

Elaine Willis, IWUSA President, visited our meeting last month. She came to pick up the programs for the IWUSA Conference. She shared some helpful ideas for club activities and recruitment of new members and encouraged participation on the district level. Communicating more of our activities to the Shawano community through the newspaper and our Rotary Club was encouraged by Elaine to “Communicate our Vision”.

We’ve received an invitation to attend the Inner Wheel District 627 Fall Meeting on Saturday, November 3, 2007, in Slinger, WI. They have adopted us to their district as we are an “undistricted club”. The cost is $12 per person and reservations need to be in by October 29^th. A sign up sheet and reservation forms will be available at the meeting. If anyone is interested in attending and meeting some very nice ladies from southern Wisconsin you should consider attending!

Gerry and I had a wonderful time at the IWUSA Conference in Milwaukee. There were approximately 64 people in attendance. The weather was unseasonably warm and so were the people we met. We began our weekend by attending the Foundation Luncheon. Suzane Sadofsky, Foundation Chairman, introduced Stephen Mandocini, Director of Clinical Support for Hanger Inc. Hanger Inc. is one of the clinics the IWC Foundation contributes to for “Giving a Child a Hand”. The first child that ever received the benefits of IWUSA Foundation was at the luncheon along with his mother. His name is Andres. He received his first prosthetic at the age of 9. He is now 22 years old and finishing college. He spoke to the group and thanked the foundation for the tremendous opportunity that was awarded to him by our generous help.

Having the prosthetic has enhanced his life and made him a more confident member of society. We were able to chat with him after the luncheon and he was very eager to demonstrate all of his capabilities to those around him.

We then attended the Business Session on Saturday and learned a lot about Parliamentary Procedure!

I served as a voting delegate and Gerry served as a steward. It was interesting and informative. We have a lot to share and will in small doses as the year unfolds. Before the business session, we attended the Memorial Breakfast. It was very moving to see the ceremony performed in recognition of all the IWUSA members that have passed away since the last conference in St. Thomas. Friendship truly abounds in this organization.

The evenings were filled with IW socializing, great meals and outstanding entertainment. Needless to say, Gerry and I are thankful and appreciative for the wonderful experience.

I hope to see you at the Chili Supper on Saturday and the meeting on Tuesday.

The Daily Grind

The meeting was called to order by President Lois Aumann.

The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all members present. Members attending were Lois Aumann, Nancy Hentges, Donna Janecek, DonnaRae Klement, Elaine Pedersen. Elaine Willis, IWUSA President, was a surprise guest at our meeting.

**Judy Judd, representing Rotary, had baskets and bowls woven in Africa for our viewing and opportunity to purchase for the benefit of the Mission Doctors (Dr. and Mrs. Stoughton) in Africa. Thank you Judy for sharing the African works of art and for having lunch with us!

Father Malcolm (a Rotarian) came into our meeting not realizing that Rotary was not having a noon meeting today. Father shared some of his Rotary experiences, having been a member on 4 different continents.

Treasurers’s Report: Lois A. reported for Elsie G. that Lois and Gerry will present a check for $100.00 to the Foundation at the conference in Milwaukee; checks were written for $105.00 each to Lois and Gerry to cover part of the conference cost; the brat wagon net profit was $112.39. There is a balance of $526.01 in the checkbook.

Correspondence: the club received the Kenosha newsletter, a Thank You card from Lois and Gerry for the contribution to their expenses for the conference, and an invite to the Safe Haven’s (domestic abuse shelter) annual banquet/fundraiser.

Unfinished Business: An October 8^th (Monday) date has been set to gather and finish the 25 Polymer neck bands. Meet at Lois A.’s home at 9:30 a.m. to finish stuffing, sewing and soaking the neckbands.

Saturday, October 20^th has been set as the date for our Chili/Bonfire/Membership Recruitment supper.

New Business: a sign up sheet was passed around for any members (and spouses if interested) for the Safe Haven banquet and fundraiser to be held Thursday, October 4^th.

Reverse Raffle A Big Success

Wayne Habeck and Greg Parker each won $500 in the Shawano Rotary Club’s Reverse Raffle recently held at The Woodland in Gresham.
Funds raised by the club go to a variety of uses, but most funding goes toward improving Shawano’s Kuckuk Park along the Wolf River and for Dr. Richard Stoughton’s medical services in Zimbabwe, Africa.
While the big money was given to the people whose ticket was drawn last, others won their ticket price back or won prizes such as grocery items and baskets made in Africa. Dan Zierden won tickets to a Bill Cosby concert.
Since football was the event theme, related prizes were given there. Jim and Carol Foreman won a sausage football for their anniversary. Larry Romuald had the winning bid for a 10 year championship anniversary signed football from the Green Bay Packers.
Emcee J.R. Habeck ensured the club raffle offered unique prizes as well. Included among the fantasy football draft winners were Ila Moede, who drafted a Right Guard (deodorant) and Tom Aumann, who drafted the ultimate safety – Depends underwear.
Rob Michelson organized the event, with help from others including Curt Knoke and Steve Miller. For information about Rotary, contact any club member, including President Larry Romuald or local agent and membership chairman, Aaron Wallrich.

Spotlight on Samantha Huss

Samantha and Melissa Boerst were front and center helping out with our Youth Exchange Program. …. ….On Friday, Sept. 14, Cap W. held a recruiting session at Shawano High School and Melissa came back from college to help. Samantha got off class, and Fernanda Bradford Sotomayer pitched in as well.
The plan worked and we had 3 students show up on Sept 25 to learn more and receive their preliminary applications. We will hear back from them by Wed Oct 3, if they want to continue the application process and attend the October conference.

Sept 24 Monday Evening. Reverse Raffle. Rob Mickelson: This event will again be at the Woodland in Gresham. Same format as last years event, 6 PM start for the food and drinks, start pulling tickets at 7 PM, home by about 9:30 PM. I have handled all sales the past few years and wonder if anyone would like to assist. I don't mind doing it, but the network gets bigger the more help I have.

New Member Profile
There's a new Sheriff in town, and he's taken on a Rotary membership.
Randy Wright first attended school at Hayes, a suburb of Suring, where he graduated from high school as a proud Eagle.
After training at NWTC in police science, Randy worked as a Shawano County Deputy Sheriff before transferring to the Shawano City Police Department. Last year he won two contested elections to become the Sheriff.
Randy and wife Mary have sons Chris, Matt, Bryan and Brad. Matt previously spoke to our club about his experiences as a soldier in Iraq.
Randy has volunteered for the St. James Lutheran Church retreat in the Town of Wescott and enjoys hunting, fishing and traveling.
He hopes to improve our area through Rotary partly by continuing park improvements and encouraging youth programs.

Board Action at the Aug 28 meeting:
There was discussion about the kind of sign Shawano Rotary Club wants at the new City park near Kuckuk park. we donated a good sum of money towaqrd this is park.
we decided on type of signage we want. The next step is that
Rob M will go to Jim Stadler for his approval and go from there.
We chose the monoliths. I am sure we will have an unveiling event when they are done.

Spotlight on Samantha Huss

Sam will be a senior at Shawano Community High School this year. Then she plans to attend the College of the Menominee Nation for 4 semesters to get started on her 4 year degree. Later she plans to transfer to St Norbert or one of the UW system locations (UWO or UWSP) to study International Business.

Rotary Stuffed Animals Project.

Rob, Larry, and Judy - showing the results of the drive to collect stuffed animals for our troops in Iraq and Afganistan. From Larry’s basement, they go to Houghton, MI, then to Iraq.
Our forces there, give them out to children in the areas where they serve, as they organize activities and sports for the kids.

The shelter box program.

Dr. Richard Stoughton in Zimbabwe, Africa
Judy Judd reported that the Shawano Friends of Dr. Stoughton group held a fund raiser on Sat Aug 4 and raised some much needed funds to sent along to Dick in Zimbabwe.
Also – there were homemade African baskets left over and they will be on sale at the upcoming Reverse Raffle event on 9/24. Bring money.

Apply now to take part in Rotary Group Study Exchange to Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Four hard-working career people will get a month-long, all-expenses-paid educational vacation in May 2008—and you could be one of them. Rotary International District 6220 is now accepting applications for team members to participate in Rotary Group Study Exchange with District 4420 in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

The tentative schedule shows the team departing on May 1, 2008, and returning on June 1, 2008. This team will consist of the Rotarian team leader and four non-Rotarians selected from within District 6220 (Central Wisconsin to Western Michigan UP). Interested persons from all vocational areas are encouraged to apply.

Applicants must be at least 25 years old on May 1, 2008, and less than 41. In addition, those interested in taking part in the exchange must be engaged in fulltime career employment, live or work in District 6220, and may not be the spouse or child of a Rotarian. The application deadline is September 1, 2008, with committee interviews and selections tentatively scheduled for September 15th. Teams will participate in a minimum of three preparation weekends prior to the departure date.

A community service opportunity

A community Service opportunity.
At a recent meeting, the At Risk Program in our Public schools was the topic, presented by Tracy Laude and Nancy Mickelson. They described the "Pathways At-Risk Program" in the Shawano Middle School. Nancy’s summary:
“The SCMS Pathways Program is focused on 15 students for each grade level 6 through 8. An evaluation of the students is performed by the 5th grade teachers and students who would benefit from our program are then referred to Pupil Services where a final evaluation is done. The Pathways students travel together for the core classes (science, math, reading, English and social studies), thereby allowing the teachers and aide to become more familiar with the students and their individual needs. The more one-on-one time or small group tutoring we can offer, the more successful we are. Volunteers would be especially appreciated during study hall, generally the last period of the day.”
Editors note:
A lot is being done with the teacher and the paid Teachers Aide. But more could be done.
Volunteers are needed from the Rotary Club and from the rest of the community and would be greatly appreciated.
Consider volunteering one hour a day: 2 or 3 days a week. They are very flexible about scheduling volunteers. Once a week could be accommodated for those of us under the retirement age, More for Retired members.
Coordinate thru Rob and Nancy Mickelson.
Feel free to spread the word to non Rotary members that may be interested in this type of volunteerism.

Fernanda arrived on Sunday Aug 13 and is staying at the home of Melanie and Avery Miller. She came to our Rotary club meeting the next day. She is pretty good in English already and Samantha wants to help her out and show her Shawano High School as a bonus to Sam she can practice her Spanish with Fernanda. (Sam spoke Portugese while in Brazil)

> Joe, Hope you like Nick's emails. he was at CERS (Chinese Exploration and Research Society, That center is in a pretty remote area. He takes a "taxi" to town for phone service and higher sped internet. He has called us a few times from a pay phone in a laundromat that was several miles from the Center. If you get a chance check out the CERS website. They really are involved in a lot of projects that propmote sustainable development. The Director of CERS is an alumni from UW-RF. His son is now a student at UWRF. Kelly Cain is the professor that Nick worked with to get this internship. Kelly has done quite a bit of project work with CERS. I think the director's name is Wong How Man.
Thank you again for asking Nick to the Rotary meeting. After that newspaper article, several young students have talked with me about getting some experience internationally. I think the Rotary Club is doing so much for helping so many become more globally aware.
I figured you would be interested in Nick's experiences. Feel free to email Nick with any questions or thoughts that you may have about his summer internship. I am sure he will get back to you.

I think we are about 13 hours ahead of you guys. If I am in town tomorrow
I will try again. It costs about $1US per 3min.
I have been trying to finish up the trail paper I have been working on. So
far it is about 7 pages long. Kelly has been giving me feedback and
technical terms that I am not familiar with. He left today, so we will
have to email copies back and forth. It is a little stressful, because I
have never done this type of work before and I have to tailor it to two
audiences; school professors and village members. It is definitely a
learning experience.
The CERS center is about 10km outside of town, so I usually take a taxi.
They have internet here, but it is dial-up. To get any research done or
send pictures, I have to go into town and sit at one of the cafes.
It is definately a different world. It is pretty easy around the tourist
areas, because people speak a little English. But there is only one
interpretor at the center right now. I do a lot of pointing and hand
gestures.
Most of the students are gone as well. I think it is going to be a lonely
couple of weeks, until the others get here. But it will work out. I'm
going to take the train to Beijing to meet the others on the 22nd. It
takes about two days to get there, but it is about half the price of plane
tickets. Plus, I kinda wanted to see the rest of the country and I think
this is a good way to do it. Someone else is going to buy my tickets and
then I will pay them back.

All is well here. I got back from Longdu (cheese factory) on the first. I
had a little stomach bug yesterday, but I think it has passed. Most of the
food here is prepared with alot! of grease. It's like eating a bar for
every meal. But I had my first experience with yak butter tea and yak
cheese. Both are better than expected. On the last night at Longdu, we had
yak cheese curds. It felt a little like Wiscony. I miss you guys, but it
is only another month or so and I will be back home.
Here are a few pics of the trip so far. The lake is one of the proposed
trails I am working on, and the yak one is just fun.
I tried sending more, but the e-mail wouldn't send.

Hey guys, (or Ni hau)

I am still at the cheese factory site, one of the girls working on the
financial side of the factory has internet access through her cell phone.
This is a weird place for that kind of technology, one minute it seems
that you stepped back two hundred years and then you turn around and your
10 years into the future. It takes a little getting used to. But the food
has been very good, they have a garden here and grow most of there own
vegetables. You end up having the same meals over and over, but it is all
very tasty. And I'm getting pretty good with chopsticks.
But anyway, my tasks here are to set up plans for hiking trails and better
bathroom facilities. They want to become an eco-tourism site, but they
dump most of their waste into the river or burn it; so there is work to be
done. The site is in a valley and we have been hiking up the sides to see
meadow areas. It is definitely not for your average tourist, but that will
keep the riff-raff out. Yesterday, we went into a village near by named
Longdu and then continued into Sichunuan Province. The purpose was to look
at potential homestay sites for tourists. It is an option, but the visitor
would definitely need to keep an open mind. Sanitation is not a big
concern around here, I will send you some pictures when I have a faster
internet connection. But traditionally, the animals are kept on the first
floor, the family lives on the second, and grain is stored on the third
(usually barley or corn).
Well I probably should get back to work, it rains most afternoons and I
have to get some more outside observation in yet today. I will write you
guys in a few days when I am back in Shangri-la.

Things are well here. We are going up to the cheese factory tomorrow and will stay
there until july 1st. Kelly's proposal is getting translated, so hopefully
they will let us help out. It is the villages decision if they want to
follow our plan or if they want to go on their own, so fingers crossed

I may have to get another bag to bring things back in, bu
tI'm sure it is very reasonably priced. it is amazing how far $10 can go
here. A meal for two people is about $6. There are about ten people at the
CERS center right now. A few staff and a few students, but that changes
every day. Well I must run and have supper, so I will talk to you guys
later.

Hey mom and dad,
I made it to the center last night around 10ish. I just had breakfast,
rice with eggs and fried ginger root, it was quite good. Now I'm am
checking my email on one of the computers here. I think my computer will
work, I haven't tried it since Beijing. We are going into town in a little
bit to talk over what kind of work I can do while I'm here. I will keep
you updated on that. This is a busy place, people are running around all
over. A group from UW Madison is in here, working with the Wetland site.
Apperhently they have some other connections that allow for limited work
on the wetland. There is no escaping politics, not even in China. I will
have to send some pics soon, it is quite the place. We're in a valley
surronded by forested mountains. Not to mention they have 11% alc. beer;
I have had some tea here, and yeah, it is nothing close to Lipton. The
leaves are balled up and they just throw them in the cup, without a bag or
screen. They eventually unroll and sink to the bottom. But they are about
an inch long and half an inch wide. I wil have to bring some back for you
guys.
Well, I should get some things together to head into town. I'll keep y'all
informed.

I´m just wrighting so you know that I´m doing pretty good. I´m looking
for work until the end of september, because then I´ll start working as
an aprentice in the production of a movie. I´m getting to know a lot of
people that is relatng with the all cinematography/photography world and
I´m more sure than ever that is what I want to do for the rest of my life.

I have been enjoying the company of Elaine Pang, the Rotary Exchange
Student from New Jersey that lived with my family all year. Her parents
came last wednesday and she left last night with them to come back to the
US. My parents truly enjoy her company and she had a lot of fun.
I had the chance to enjoy my family all day long, and we had a lot to
talk about and to share. The other night my parents toll me that they
think I have grown up and mature a hole lot and they are really pleased
with that and make them more secure about me going to live in a big city
as it is Buenos Aires.

I have been recovering all the "going out and come back at 7 in the
morning on (on weekends)", so I havent been getting all my sleep... but
I have had so much fun with my friend that is worth it.

Well, enough about me. Now I want to know how is everything going on
Shawano.
Please tell everybody in Rotary all my news.

Sept 24 Monday Evening. Reverse Raffle. Some news from Rob Mickelson: This event will again be at the Woodland in Gresham. Same format as last years event, 6 PM start for the food and drinks, start pulling tickets at 7 PM, home by about 9:30 PM. I will get with Steve Miller to have the tickets printed this week early, and start distributing the second week of August. I have handled all sales the past few years and wonder if anyone would like to assist. I don't mind doing it, but the network gets bigger the more help I have.

Samantha Huss in the news !!
Sam will be in a competition for the Shawano County Fair Ambassador position to be held August 5. If selected, she will be titled the Fairest of the Fair, and participate in all main events at the Shawano County Fair this fall. Also involved is Amber Swenor who held that position in 2002, won our Rotary Club Scholarship, went to Africa, and spoke at our club several times.

As mentioned above she will give a program on the Shelter Box Program on Aug 27. She has some professional Videos to show and will be selling wrist bands and seeking larger contributions for the Shelter Box efforet.
Melissa has graduated from SCHS and has a summer job at KI Bonduel. (Krueger International).
This fall, she will go to UW Eau Claire, Major in International Business and Minor in Psychology so she can go into Public relations. Will take more Spanish language classes in College. Her plans include her sophmore spring semester in England again to study Business and also to visit a Rotary Exchange student she met while abroad. She has volunteered to help out with our recruiting efforts to obtain our next outbound student for Youth Exchange. On Friday Sept 14, Mel will be home from college and she can do a presentation to students at the local High Schools with Cap and Samantha.

What Rotarian is most likely to wear a tie featuring Winnie the Pooh?
John Dovorany already has. The tie theme has fit his child patient specialty for about 30 years now, since graduation from Marquette Dental School. Earlier, John attended UW Milwaukee.
John has done programs for children on dental care and looks forward to community service through Rotary.
John, his wife Sheila and daughter Kelsey live next to Shawano Lake, which fits his interest in fishing and boating. John also enjoys hunting, golf and skiing.

Heard around town:
Carl Carmichael was at the Shawano Medical Center on Thursday July 5 with Senator Steve Kagan. They took a tour and made a presentation to the hospital staff and visitors. It turns out that Carl ran the campaign that got Sen. Kagan elected, and now he is managing his district office in Green Bay and his Washington office as well.
Editors note: Carl Carmichael was the Shawano School District superintendent a while back, and an Optimist Club member. He moved away from Shawano to work in Madison, and is back again now.

Notes from an Interesting Program
Mon 7/9/07

The At Risk Program in our Public schools was the topic, presented by Tracy Laude and Nancy Mickelson. They described the "Pathways At-Risk Program" in the Shawano Middle School. Nancy’s summary:
“The SCMS Pathways Program is focused on 15 students for each grade level 6 through 8. An evaluation of the students is performed by the 5th grade teachers and students who would benefit from our program are then referred to Pupil Services where a final evaluation is done. The Pathways students travel together for the core classes (science, math, reading, English and social studies), thereby allowing the teachers and aide to become more familiar with the students and their individual needs. The more one-on-one time or small group tutoring we can offer, the more successful we are. Volunteers would be especially appreciated during study hall, generally the last period of the day.”
Editors note:
A lot is being done with the teacher and the paid Teachers Aide. But more could be done.
Volunteers are needed from the Rotary Club and from the rest of the community and would be greatly appreciated.
Consider volunteering one hour a day: 2 or 3 days a week. They are very flexible about scheduling volunteers. Once a week could be accommodated for those of us under the retirement age, More for Retired members.
Coordinate thru Rob and Nancy Mickelson.
Feel free to spread the word to non Rotary members that may be interested in this type of volunteerism.

Another project for our troops.

The Inner Wheel Club of Shawano is sending packages to soldiers in Iraq...We're looking for names of local soldiers to send gift packs to. I would like to extend the opportunity to you to consider joining our Rotary Club. The club meets weekly every Monday noon at Angie's Main Street Diner. The meetings run from noon til 1pm. Our club is involved with a few ongoing projects, such as: Scholarships to HS grads, Youth Rotar program, Youth Exchange Program, Dr. Stoughton's mission in Africa, and the International Program to eliminate Polio worldwide.
Community projects include: Cleanups of the Mountain Bay Trail, Walking
Path at the Kuckuk Park, and the Easy Reader Program.
Fundraising activities include: Popcorn Wagon at the Flea Markets and
an annual Reverse Raffle at the Woodland.
Our new president for this year is Larry Romuald and he is looking
forward to new membership.

Rotary Float Hits Parade Circuit

The centennial float renovated for the centennial
celebration in 2005 has again hit the parade circuit.
To date, the Gresham parade on June 30, Bonduel
on July 4 and Navarino on July 14 have had the float
in action, featuring the motto "Service above self".
While J.R. Habeck has pulled the float so far,
anyone with a ball hitch and hand power drill can do
so. The float is stored near Randall Schmidt's
garage alongside highway 47-55, just upstream from the
north end of Old Keshena Road.
J.R. Habeck has a listing of parades for anyone
wishing to help out.

Here is a request from Lois Aumann of the Inner Wheel Club.

The Inner Wheel Club of Shawano is sending packages to soldiers in Iraq...We're looking for names of local soldiers to send gift packs to. Special announcement between newsletters.
At our recent meeting on Monday July 16, President Larry Romuald asked for the club to get involved with a project sponsored by the Houghton, MI Rotary Club. We are collecting "like new" stuffed toys (no battery operated toys) to send to our troops in Iraq. They give them out to the children they meet to help show the Iraqis that the American soldier has genuine compassion for the children and the future of the country.
The toys collected will be shipped to the right places by The ROTC Commander at Michigan Technological Univ. and a Houghton Rotarian.
Larry will provide a box at each meeting here in Shawano for the next month to collect your donated toys and send them along to Houghton.

To Shawano Rotary Club -

Hi everybody!.

Next monday July 23, will be my last meeting. My last time to see all of you before I return home.

I address this message to all of you because before going home
I have to sell the green wrist bands to raise money for the Shelter Box Project. I have 10 of them
avalaible and each of them cost $10.

If you buy one of these, you will be helping the project of the Shelter Box.
Shelter
Box is a global grassroots Rotary club project. It helps provide
critical shelter after a disaster such as the Katirna Storm or the
Tsuami in Indonesia - for up to 10 people. High quality, new items
include:
a 10-person tent, 10 sleeping bags, water purification, tablets,
falshlight/baterries, rope, cooking/eating utensils, tools, stove, rain
ponchos, etc.

If you contribute to this project you will be help somebody that has lost their house and land in a disaster. We are preparing for the future.

Our Summer (Short Term) Exchange Student from Shawano, (Rebecca Dakai) and her guest, from Finland (Elina), will be attending our noon Rotary meeting, Monday July 2. Rebecca will give a little talk. Cap
